About this grant

The Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom is a German liberal foundation, one of the publicly funded organisations that support gifted students. The page “Stipendien für EU-Studierende” is for citizens of EU countries who study a first degree full time at a state or state-recognised German university or start next semester; all subjects are supported. All scholarship holders receive €300 a month for study costs, and the main scholarship is calculated under the education ministry's guidelines modelled on BAföG; unlike BAföG it does not have to be repaid. There are also grants for studying abroad for up to 12 months. The scholarship is approved for one year first and then extended every year until graduation within the standard period.

You can apply even if you are “about to take your Abitur and then want to study”, that is before entering university; that is the wording for the German Abitur and the page does not explain how the foundation treats the Spanish Bachillerato, so ask stipendien-bewerbung@freiheit.org. Selection needs good to very good grades, an interest in politics, social engagement and a liberal, open outlook. A reference letter is also requested through a personal link that can be generated from 1 March or 1 September. The minimum funding period is two semesters at the start.

The application windows are 1 to 30 April and 1 to 31 October, with the deadline at 23:59; the October one is open now. Invitations to interview are announced by 8 February or 8 August, and the next interviews will be on 26 and 27 February 2027 in Potsdam. For you, finishing Bachillerato in June 2027, there are two realistic options: apply now, by 31 October 2026, or in April 2027 before starting to study in autumn 2027. The page does not give the main amount (a third-party site says up to €992 a month), and the language of study and German level depend on the university, not the foundation.
